Used For:

• Vonavir is an antiretroviral therapy (ART) tablet containing a combination of:Efavirenz 600 mgEmtricitabine 200 mgTenofovir disoproxil fumarate 300 mg

Contraindications:

• Do not use Vonavir if you:Are allergic to efavirenz, emtricitabine, tenofovir, or any excipients.Have severe liver impairment (significant hepatic dysfunction).Have moderate to severe renal impairment (dose adjustment or alternative may be needed).Have a heart condition with QT interval prolongation, history of arrhythmias, or low electrolytes (risk of serious cardiac effects).Important interaction contraindications:Avoid use with certain drugs that interact with efavirenz (e.g., terfenadine, astemizole, cisapride, pimozide, quinidine, ergot alkaloids, some sedatives and antiarrhythmics).Herbal supplements like St. John’s Wort can reduce efavirenz effectiveness and are not recommended.

Side Effects:

• Common (may improve with time):Dizziness, drowsinessHeadache, difficulty sleeping (insomnia), abnormal dreamsNausea, vomiting, diarrheaRash, fatigueMood changes (anxiety, depression)Less Common / Serious:Severe rash or blisteringPsychiatric symptoms: depression, suicidal thoughts, confusionLiver toxicity (raised liver enzymes, jaundice)Kidney dysfunction (assess creatinine clearance)Bone mineralization effects (rare osteonecrosis)Electrolyte disturbances (low phosphate)

Precautions:

• Do not stop therapy suddenly. Stopping can lead to viral rebound and resistance.Monitor liver function tests (LFTs), kidney function (KFTs), and viral load/CD4 regularly.Use caution in patients with a history of psychiatric illness, seizures, or substance abuse.May cause dizziness and impaired concentration — avoid driving/heavy machinery if affected

Dietary Restrictions:

• Take on an empty stomach for optimal absorption (unless your doctor advises otherwise).Avoid alcohol — it can worsen liver strain and increase side effects like dizziness.Eat a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and protein to support immunity.Avoid raw or undercooked meat, eggs, and seafood to reduce infection risk.Maintain good hydration.Practice safe sex and do not share needles or personal items.Inform your doctor about pregnancy or breastfeeding — Vonavir use in pregnancy requires careful risk/benefit assessment
